How to contribute

In short

Two things publish the moment you send them: which species are in a water, and how hard it is to get to.

Everything else is read by a person first — the permission, the price, the ticket link, who controls it, the boundary, and every word of free text.

No account is needed to submit waters or corrections. An account credits your work to you. Accounts are required to submit photographs or catch reports.

Adding a water

Draw it on the map, then describe it.

Every submission is manually reviewed.

Drawing it yourself is the part only somebody who knows the water can do, and it is required: a stretch has a start and an end, and a description of where those are is not something anybody else can turn into a boundary.

Correcting something already on the map

1. Find the water, from the map or by searching for it.
2. On its page, open Help improve this water.
3. Choose the section you want to change. Each one asks only for the fields it needs.
4. Send it. You do not need an account.

If something on the page is wrong rather than missing, use the Report incorrect information button instead. It takes a short description of what is wrong and goes to the same queue.

Species and access difficulty appear straight away. Everything else is checked by a person first, so a correction can take a few days to appear.

A telephone number has to arrive with evidence — a page on the club’s or fishery’s own site showing the number — because a number published here is a number people will ring believing it is the water’s.

The price and the ticket link are reviewed for a specific reason. A payment link that appeared on a public page unread is an invitation to take money from anglers for a day ticket that does not exist, on a water the person setting it up has nothing to do with. It is the one instant field that was worth money to abuse, so it is not instant.

Why all free text is reviewed

Free text is reviewed to prevent spurious submissions or offensive text being displayed on the site. As everything is human-reviewed, submissions may take a few days to appear.

What happens to what you send

Submissions are screened automatically for offensive language, then queued for a person. We store a one-way hash of your IP address — never the address itself — to stop one person flooding the site and to count feedback once per person. See the privacy notice.

Photographs

You can add a photograph to any water. It needs an account, because we have to be able to answer somebody who says the picture is theirs.

Location and camera data is stripped from the file before it is stored, so a photograph never records where you were standing. A person looks at every one before it appears, and anybody can ask for one to be taken down.
